From Alo Coffee:
"Alo Coffee began with a dream — and a leap of courage. For years, former university lecturer and electrical engineer Tamiru worked in coffee, witnessing an industry where quality was often overlooked and producers struggled. Despite deep experience, unfair pricing and undervalued labor left him hesitant to strike out on his own. Then in 2020, Ethiopia held its first Cup of Excellence (CoE) competition — a revelation that exceptional coffee could be recognized and rewarded. With his wife Messi, he set out on a shared mission: to prove that Sidama's finest coffee belongs among the world's best. In 2021, against the odds, their first competition lot — carefully processed cherries from their home village of Alo in Bensa — won Ethiopia's Cup of Excellence, confirming their belief that greatness comes not only from tradition, but from persistence.
'Murgo' is a Sidamic word meaning miracle, mystery, and that which transcends the earthly — a symbol of this origin's extraordinary potential. Coffee processed here aims for excellence, distinctiveness, and something truly beyond expectation. JARC 74158 is an Ethiopian landrace variety developed by the Jimma Agricultural Research Center (JARC) in 1979, combining disease resistance with 'captivating sweetness.' It is known for white floral aromatics, honey, yellow sugar, and stone-fruit notes of peach and apricot.
Alo's process includes hand-picking ripe cherries, immediate flotation and pulping, then slow shade-drying on raised beds with a thin layer of mucilage left on the parchment so the coffee gently absorbs those distinctive pectin flavors."
